Grand Hôtel Stockholm

A storied Stockholm stay

Even without peeking through Grand Hôtel Stockholm’s files, you know the property has a story to tell. The startling exterior, with its turrets and towers above, offers the first clues. Once inside, stately pillars, crown molding and Carrara marble floors reveal further details about a building that’s known its place in the world for some time. Erected in 1874 across the harbor from the royal palace, the Grand is considered to be one of Sweden’s first luxury hotels. Throughout the years, Nobel Prize winners, Grammy Award recipients and world leaders have all stayed alongside discerning everyday travelers. And because the waterfront location and neo-Renaissance grandeur aren’t going anywhere, guests will only keep coming.

But it’s not just the look of the Stockholm hotel that sets the tone. With three restaurants that have earned acclaim for decades, it also has a taste for refinement. In the Cadier Bar, you have a spot where absinthe and afternoon tea are sipped in leather chairs much like they were back in hotel founder Régis Cadier’s day. And even through the pine-scented Nordic Spa & Fitness, the property somehow manages to feel like a trip back to nobler times.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • With a host of attractive room and suite styles here, you can choose your own overnight Scandinavian adventure. But no matter which of the spacious units you select, you’ll be surrounded by high ceilings, fishbone flooring, marble baths and silk robes.
  • The eight-room Nordic Spa curates a slew of customizable treatments that offer a sense of place. Nordic Beauty, for instance, melds a native cranberry scrub and steam bath with a harmony massage and organic facial for an invigorating 90 minutes.
  • Mathias Dahlgren, one of Sweden’s most celebrated chefs, guides the culinary sails at two Grand restaurants, the informal, modern bistro Matbaren and lauded vegetarian eatery Rutabaga.
  • While the Champagne Bar and Wine Cellar are onsite spots for particular pours, the Cadier Bar’s well-rounded drink roster, food menu and Don Draper-approved design make it the hotel’s premier spot for a few rounds.
  • Fresh flowers can be found in Cadier Bar, your room and almost anywhere else a glass vase will fit. The in-house team of florists can be thanked for keeping all the spaces looking so vibrant.

Things to Know

  • Until the late 1920s, every Nobel Prize banquet was held at the hotel. Though the esteemed gathering eventually outgrew Grand Hôtel Stockholm, many laureates and their families continue to stay at the property around the annual ceremony.
  • The luxury hotel’s great location cannot be overstated. It’s close to high-end shopping, world-class museums and top restaurants. And you’ll have stunning views of the royal palace and Gamla Stan (“Old Town”) from your room.
  • Stellar service comes in all the usual places at the property. The Grand separates itself by extending a white-gloved hand away from it, too. Thanks to a chauffeured fleet of luxury vehicles (such as the Mercedes S-Class and Bentley Mulsanne), private trips and airport transfers can be arranged.
