The Alpina Gstaad

Contemporary alpine high style
VERIFIED LUXURY

The Alpina Gstaad sits on prime alpine real estate. Just a 10-minute walk from Gstaad village, the sprawling five-acre property crowns the top of Oberbort, an exclusive hill perched beside a pristine mountain panorama that pretty much yodels Swiss charm.

If the setting is classic, the hotel itself is anything but. Offering a much-needed shot of youthful adrenaline to the often-staid world of Swiss ski resorts, the Alpina was a revelation when it debuted in 2012, incorporating local stone and wood in its unapologetically modern design.

This isn’t your Aunt Heidi's alpine getaway — fully stocked with a contemporary playbook of features, the Alpina is the reinvented mountain retreat, offering as many features as a Swiss army knife. Among the resort's new-school amenities: a Six Senses Spa, private cinema, cigar lounge, yoga studio, Japanese restaurant and world-class modern art collection.

The best place to appreciate all this innovative luxury is in the Alpina Lounge and Bar, where the floor-to-ceiling windows offer a perfect view of the surrounding Bernese Alps and the menu of innovative cocktails mirrors the hotel's own creative energy.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Alpina's contemporary design doesn't neglect a sense of place. Playful nods to Swiss culture are incorporated everywhere, from glass sculptures simulating icicles dotting the hallways to cinematic photos of the Alps.
  • Plan your own personalized retreat with the Gstaad resort’s tailored services, ranging from a digital detoxing “silent stay” and health-minded meal options to a fully equipped Silver Sport shop right in the entrance to the hotel.
  • The golden pine integrated throughout the property is largely recycled wood from old Austrian, Swiss and French farms, adding a glowing, classic patina to the Alpina's sleek contemporary design.
  • The sprawling Six Senses Spa offers everything from locavore Swiss services (an alpine anti-aging facial) to Asian-inspired treatments (think Himalayan salt scrub). The serene subterranean pool adds an extra level of Zen.
  • The luxury hotel's seriously curated collection of contemporary art includes work by Jana Euler, Wade Guyton and Nicole Eisenman and features an eclectic mix — from abstract pieces and street art to a portrait of a supremely elegant-looking Swiss Simmental cow.

Things to Know
