Tylney Hall Hotel, Hampshire

An enchanting estate in Hampshire
VERIFIED LUXURY
Tylney Hall Hotel, Hampshire is an elegant 112-room mansion hotel with an expanse of gardens, lakes and forest, and is one of England’s quintessential luxury country retreats. Based in Hampshire, about 50 miles from London, the existing mansion was built during the Victorian era and first functioned as a palatial estate for the Tylney family in the 1700s.

The property became a hotel in 1985 and maintains a classic ethos — oak-paneled walls, gilded ceilings and period paintings — and is best suited for traditionalists who prefer the opulent living of yesteryear.

Tylney Hall is renowned for its acres of glorious garden space and woodlands, where 250,000 trees and shrubs surround the stately mansion. Feed the pond ducks in the bucolic Water Garden or lose yourself in a forest of redwoods alongside a picturesque lake. Horticultural even takes over the mansion itself, with Virginia creepers and rose trees elegantly caressing the red brick exterior.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The historic gardens and grounds remain the main draw for guests, with 66 acres of meticulously designed hedges, lawns, wildlife-rich lakes and a forest of redwood trees imported from Western Canada.
  • There is a plethora of facilities and activities on offer for the active traveler, including access to the 18-hole Tylney Park Golf Club, tennis courts, heated indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, a croquet lawn and clay pigeon shooting.
  • British chef Michael Lloyd runs the hotel’s formal Oak Room Restaurant, and his modern interpretation of seasonal British cuisine is a delight.
  • The Italian Lounge adjacent to the main lobby is arguably Tylney Hall’s most stunning room, with its gilded, lattice-patterned ceiling imported from Grimation Palace in Florence, Italy.
Things to Know
  • While many naturally vie for rooms in the Mansion House, the rooms and suites located alongside the picturesque garden areas also make for a fine stay.
  • It’s tempting to spend more time in the mansion’s three elegant, characterful lounges than in your room with their plush seating, sumptuous period details and views of the lovely gardens and woodlands.
  • Take advantage of the traditional afternoon tea, which includes quality tea blends, sandwiches, cakes and warm scones hosted in the Mansion House’s various lounges.
  • The Library Lounge is the mansion’s coziest hideaway; get lost in a book from the well-stocked shelves next to the fireplace or partake in a tipple from the full cocktail bar.
  • Of the many manicured gardens on the estate, the Italian Garden has the most stunning setting — you’ll find period fountains and peacock-shaped hedges on a terraced lawn, and a tranquil lake in the foreground.
The Rooms
  • There are 112 rooms scattered throughout the property; choose between accommodations in the Mansion House or around one of the many lovely garden areas.
  • Room sizes range from 332 square feet Deluxe Rooms to the generous 700 square feet Mansion Suites.
