Takanawa Hanakohro

An exclusive, modern ryokan
VERIFIED LUXURY

Tucked inside Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa, you will find Takanawa Hanakohro, an intimate 16-suite ryokan (traditional inn). With a name meaning “floral-scented path,” this exclusive corridor consists of beautiful Japanese-style suites, each named for the flora found in the property’s extensive garden.

Housed in an area once occupied by the royal family (look out for remnants of imperial residences on the grounds), this hotel-within-a-hotel delivers a fully immersive Japanese experience, with activities such as sake tasting and origami offered in a traditional setting.

Beyond the usual service touch points, Hanakohro’s lovely kimono-clad staff is delighted to discuss Japanese art, culture and history.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Solely for Takanawa Hanakohro guests, OH-SAI Lounge puts out extravagant breakfasts, cocktails and snacks. It also hosts other Japanese experiences, such as bespoke origami classes, sake tastings and furoshiki (the Japanese art of fabric wrapping) lessons.
  • SPA TAYUTA takes pampering to a new level with private services — the whole facility is booked out for each guest. Treatments are complemented by Japanese oils and ingredients like yuzu, cedar and chamomile that perfume the entire space.
  • Takanawa Hanakohro is next to Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa’s renowned tempura restaurant Wakatake. The traditionally styled dining room is appointed with wooden screens and panels, and affords views of the gorgeous surrounding gardens.
  • The Tokyo hotel’s grounds are home to The Kihinkan Guest House, a former imperial residence built in 1911. Though it’s now used for private parties and events, the European-inspired chateau retains much of its historic charm in the form of original fittings and stained glass features.
  • Experience a traditional tea ceremony in the OH-SAI Lounge or in the tranquil and more formal setting of the garden’s Chikushin-an Japanese tea house. The staff can dress you in a kimono and teach you the etiquette of this centuries-old ritual.

Things to Know

  • Takanawa Hanakohro boasts a collection of gorgeous Japanese modern landscape art. Ask the staff to explain the imagery and symbolism behind these eye-catching pieces.
  • Don’t have time to shop? Don’t worry — you will be presented with a unique Japanese souvenir upon your departure.
  • Thanks to its location within Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa, the boutique hotel gives you access to plenty of facilities, including a summertime outdoor pool, the sprawling gardens, a spa and a host of elegant eateries.

The Rooms

  • All 16 suites are traditional tatami rooms with mat floors, screens, low beds, Japanese tea sets and fresh ikebana flower arrangements. The largest accommodation spans more than 10,000 square feet of space.
  • The bathrooms are equally authentic, some with stone-tile tubs, buckets and Japanese bath tablets.
  • The extensive room service menu encompasses the scope of all restaurants on the property. Choose from wagyu beef, seafood, tempura and comfort foods like curries and club sandwiches.

Nearby Attractions

  • The sprawling 215,000-square-foot garden surrounding the luxury hotel is a destination in itself. Be sure to visit in the spring, when more than 200 cherry blossom trees transform the grounds into a colorful urban forest dotted with bridges and architecture from an ancient temple.
  • You’ll find popular attractions in almost every direction from the hotel. Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa, the Nikon Museum and other interesting detours are short cab rides away.
  • Takanawa Hanakohro is conveniently near Shinagawa Station, a major shinkansen (bullet train) stop. This high-speed mode of transport makes it easy to explore the far reaches of Japan and major attractions such as Mount Fuji and the ancient city of Kyoto.
