Thompson Washington D.C.

Navy Yard’s hot spot
VERIFIED LUXURY

The hottest attraction in Navy Yard is undoubtedly the Washington Nationals, winners of the 2019 World Series. And if you’re coming to see the champs or just to check out D.C., there’s no better place to bunk down than the nearby Thompson Washington D.C., the brand’s first outpost in the capital.

Inspired by its waterfront location and the industrial heritage of Navy Yard, the luxury hotel boasts a midcentury-modern-meets-nautical vibe, from its deep gray stone exterior to its rooms with details inspired by the interior of a ship’s cabin. Many of the 225 accommodations boast panoramic views from floor-to-ceiling windows of the nearby Anacostia River or Nationals Park.

While there are some of the city’s buzziest restaurants and bars just outside your door, you may not want to leave, with perks like buzzy rooftop bar Anchovy Social and Danny Meyer restaurant Maialino Mare.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Thompson Washington D.C.’s flagship restaurant Maialino Mare is inspired by a Roman trattoria with coastal flair, dishing out mains like skate wing Milanese and chicken alla diavola (with pickled chili pepper) under executive chef Rose Noel.
  • You’ll be walking distance to Nationals Park, home of the World Series-winning Washington Nationals baseball team.
  • Make sure to hit the rooftop bar Anchovy Social, offering craft cocktails and panoramic views of Navy Yard. Don’t miss the frozen “hot” chocolate made with mezcal, fernet, cacao, coconut milk and mole bitters, or sharable small plates like porchetta melt sliders.
  • Take advantage of the luxury hotel’s riverfront location and catch the water taxi — which stops at the dock just steps from the property — to pop into Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria, The Wharf or nearby National Harbor.
  • The Washington, D.C., hotel’s dark gray exterior goes with the area’s naval industrial heritage, while interiors evoke a ship’s cabin berths and a cruise ship’s corridors, complete with dark wood, leather and brass accents.

Things to Know

  • The policy at checkered-tablecloth restaurant Maialino Mare is no tipping, just like other Union Square Hospitality spots.
  • The property is just the spot for couples. Rooms, while well appointed, are on the smaller side (from 285 square feet) and generally have one king or one queen bed — the hotel has only four rooms with two beds.

The Rooms

  • Bathrooms are a treat, with green onyx and Brazilian white avalanche marble vanities and oversized showers with a thoughtful touch for gents: fogless in-shower mirrors to help get that smooth shave.
  • In-room amenities are top-notch, from D.S. & Durga custom bath products and kimono-style robes to locally sourced minibars with goodies like Route 11 potato chips, Charm City Meadworks drinks and Frères Branchiaux Candle Co. candles. The candle brand donates 10 percent of proceeds toward Washington, D.C.’s homeless shelters.
  • You’ll sleep like a dream in SFERRA linens and beds with custom headboards made of wood boucle from Holland, done up in dark leather and oak touches.

Nearby Attractions

  • Get out and about in The Yards and beyond. Some of our favorite spots for a drink include Bluejacket brewery and District Winery, and we love to grab oysters at The Salt Line or pizza at All Purpose.
  • If you’re visiting during a Nationals home game and want to catch a last-minute game, walk up to the ticket counter either right before it starts or during the first inning and ask for the $10, standing-room-only tickets. There are always plenty of spots at the Red Porch bar, if you want to take a seat.
  • The D.C. hotel is a quick Metro or Uber ride to the monuments and museums by day if you want to sightsee, but by night, this is the place you want to be — in the evening, there’s much more to do around Navy Yard than you would find in many neighborhoods downtown.
