The larger-than-life restaurant boasts one of the largest selections of Portuguese wines in Macau, including exclusive bottles from respected Douro Valley wineries like Quinta do Crasto and Quinta do Noval. The pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the gilded, circular bar that resembles a bird cage. The ambitious design pays tribute to Macau’s long history of birdkeeping as a pastime while showcasing Lagerfeld’s attention to detail and lavish perspective.
Signature cocktails, like the Last Back Garden — comprising jasmine-infused gin, wolfberry and swallow’s nest — also highlight Macau’s past. This particular drink pays homage to the birds that nest in the fishing village Coloane and comes in a playful bird-shaped glass.

The Food

Chef Herlander Fernandes helms the kitchen, preparing elevated Portuguese food with an eye for plating and a penchant for theatrics without going overboard.
To start the gourmet journey, opt for the petiscos, or snacks, designed to be enjoyed with a glass of wine or beer. Among these, the smoked mackerel stands out with its smoked mayonnaise, a kiss of lemon and a smoked-filled glass cloche that’s a feast for the eyes.
Few things say “Portuguese” quite like piri piri chicken. Mesa marinates its chicken in a spicy brine, followed by a slow roast in vibrant piri piri sauce. The process yields moist, tender bites that take this traditional dish to the next level.
Look out for delicious Portuguese seafood dishes, like octopus à lagareiro. The rustic staple sees an elegant lift at Mesa, where chefs carefully boil, slice and roast the octopus, then serve it on a bed of mashed potatoes topped with olive oil, garlic and coriander sauce.
Attention to detail and storytelling are second to none. For example, the paprika-spiced, deep-fried mussel “escabeche” arrives in a clever Mesa-branded can. The creative presentation relates to Portugal’s canning industry, which was prominent in the early 20th century.
For those with a sweet tooth, try the fatias douradas, or “golden slices.” Portugal’s answer to French toast, these egg-battered slices of brioche come coated in sugar and cinnamon, alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream and lemon curd. But you can also opt for a classic pastry, like a delectable pastel de nata (Portuguese egg tart).
