Nouvelle Epoque

European elegance in central Tokyo
VERIFIED LUXURY

Nouvelle Epoque is unique to Tokyo for the European elegance shown in both its menu and decor. This lavish French restaurant in Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Okura Tokyo, centrally located in Toranomon, is famous for its sumptuous setting and traditional French dishes prepared with seasonal Japanese flavors. In a world growing more casual by the meal, Nouvelle Epoque is the place where haute cuisine and refinement will always have a place on the menu.

The grandiose space has a pale golden hue and is classically furnished with simple white tablecloths, regal dining chairs and elegantly modern chandeliers. The spacious main dining area is divided into intimate niches that offer views of The Okura Tokyo’s garden and the surrounding skyscrapers of Tokyo’s exclusive Minato-Ku district.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  •  The Japanese-influenced European menu is a collection of locally sourced meats, fresh vegetables and sustainably caught seafood. Fois gras, crepe suzette and petit fours complete the culinary trip to France.
  • And it doesn’t matter if you’re in the mood for a Parisian-influenced meal at breakfast (truffle-flavored eggs Benedict), lunch (boar carbonnade) or dinner (queen crab-covered flounder), Nouvelle Epoque is ready to serve.
  • Apart from the food, Nouvelle Epoque is famous for its extensive wine cellar, which is beautifully displayed behind glass. A variety of international pours are available. And, of course, there’s a natural focus on fine French wines and champagnes. There’s even a non-alcoholic champagne rosé.
  • The interior of Nouvelle Epoque manages to be both minimal and opulent at the same time. Pale gold, ecru and beige color the space, By day, light from floor-to-ceiling windows beams off the neural-toned furnishings, giving the restaurant a beautiful luminescence. At night, the space has a golden glow that’s only enhanced with white flowers and chandeliers.
  • This is a particularly posh restaurant — not just because of the premium decor or impeccable service but also the patrons. Nouvelle Epoque has a smart elegant dress code (jackets are required for gentlemen), which, in a world of “smart casual,” stands out.

The Food

  • Beautifully presented on gold-and-white plates, Nouvelle Epoque dishes are proudly prepared with Japanese flavors. Expect dishes to have shungiku (a local leafy green), the citrusy yuzu and Japanese pepper in them. The popular barley tea usually finds its way onto tables as well.
  • Nouvelle Epoque’s menu may be seasonal, but it’s renowned for favorites that don’t change throughout the year, including fine cuts of beef, fresh fois gras, local artichokes and French caviar.
  • Excellent French breads are served with a selection of butters that come smoked, fermented and flavored as if they came from a bakery in Bordeaux.
