Thermal Spring Spa at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, A Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa

Where nature meets modern luxury in Kyoto
VERIFIED LUXURY

Soaking in a natural onsen, or hot spring bath rich in minerals, not only feels good, but many believe it's good for your overall health as well. Both of these reasons prove perfect for making HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, A Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa’s Thermal Spring Spa a stop on your next trip to Japan. Built around the underground caves and pools more than 3,000 feet below the hotel, the spa utilizes the natural hot springs that course beneath the property.

Aside from the hot springs, the spa also contains four elegant treatment rooms. Many of the services feature traditional Japanese anma massage, which combines kneading, rubbing, tapping and shaking to help loosen and relax the muscles, much like modern shiatsu. Reflexology for the hands and feet appears throughout the spa menu as well. You also will find services enhanced with nature’s remedies, including rice, parsley, roses from Izumo, green papaya and more.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The pools have a natural mix of sodium chloride and calcium chloride in the water. These elements, along with the soothing heat, have been known to improve blood circulation, ease depression and help with dry skin.
  • Natural rock lining the walls and accenting the pools and treatment rooms remind you that the hot springs were formed under the earth in thermal caves. It gives you the sense of being in nature, too, even while the setting remains modern.
  • Get alone time by booking the private onsen. It's the ultimate oasis complete with a wet living space, stunning Japanese garden and separate bath filled with the same healing waters of the hot spring. Only guests of the hotel have access to this space, which makes it even more exclusive. Guests also have the option to dine in the private room, with a menu that includes the hotel's lavish afternoon tea spread.
  • Try the TOKI Signature Journey. The combination of facial and body treatments is based on traditional Chinese medicine — it was designed in collaboration with an acupuncturist.
  • Unlike the hot springs found in many mountain towns and ski resorts, this spot is all about luxury. There are cushions and lounge chairs lining the pools, stairs and handlebars to help you get into the water, and low lights surrounding the hot springs. It's not bright by any means, but the soothing light adds to the ambiance and helps you see where you're stepping.

Things to Know

  • Many of the treatments focus on the idea of the ying-yang balance and the five elements, including metal, wood, water, fire and earth. If one of these elements speaks to you, the therapist and/or staff will find a way to center the treatment around it.
  • There's a fully equipped gym available for hotel guests 16 years old and up.
  • While the Kyoto spa is open to reservations outside the hotel, many treatments and services are kept solely for guests.
  • The massage oils are created specially for the spa, all with custom-made scents.
