Forbes Travel Guide performs independent, incognito inspections of all hotels we rate. This is what we paid when we stayed at this hotel.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

Originating from Thailand, the Banyan Tree Spa concept is Eastern in philosophy and atmosphere — therapists are chosen from Thai provinces and train countless hours to deliver high-quality services with a deep sense of serenity.

The result? A spa that gives travelers a taste of Asian-style pampering amid the mangroves of Mexico.

Our Inspector's Highlights

The uniqueness of Banyan Tree Spa Mayakoba starts with its 16 treatment rooms, which are all individual villas poised over water.
Each treatment begins with an herbal tea and a footbath.
Body therapies, facials and beauty treatments using luxurious products from renowned brands like Natura Bissé round out the very extensive menu.
Each villa has its own plunge pool, living area, a bathroom with a deep soaking tub, rain shower and a private garden.
Resort guests can opt to have spa treatments in the privacy of their villas, which are built discreetly into the landscape along garden paths and accessed via buggy.

Things to Know

Guests of the spa will meet a therapist who will lead them to a private jungle- or lagoon-view therapy villa.
Banyan Tree Spas are known for a host of signature treatments, but The Rainforest Indulgence is the spa’s truly singular service.
There’s pretty much nothing you can’t do at this elaborate spa. Even yoga classes are available upon request.

The Treatments

Guests can opt for the signature Asian therapies, from Ayurvedic massage and Balinese-style massage, to Sukhothai and Thai classic massage.
Traditional therapies like Swedish massage and sports massage are also available.
The 150-minute Rainforest Indulgence is an eight-step process involving rain showers, steam therapy, a detoxifying mud application, saunas and ice baths before taking a calming dip in the vitality pool, which is followed by a massage.

The Facilities

Rooms are minimalist in design, featuring natural earth tones with pops of turquoise and reds; wide windows provide natural light and a view over the resort’s mangrove forests and iconic serpentine canals.
The signature wet areas of the spa have a more modern twist with slick stone walls and pebbled paths contrasted with soft purple and blue lighting.
The dimly lit indoor vitality pool features several underwater lounge chairs ideal for relaxing pre- or post-treatment.
The lovely Spa Pool Villas are designed for couples and have romantic touches like outdoor showers and views of Mayakoba’s lagoons. But the real reason to book one of these rooms is to experience private, outdoor treatments.
In addition to the spa, guests of the resort can hit the main pool, the El Camaleon Mayakoba Golf Club, play tennis and seek out an abundance of natural wildlife.
