This spa, located inside Rosewood Mayakoba just outside Playa del Carmen, is no exception.

Thanks to an elaborate network of canals carved through limestone linking existing lagoons and mangrove forests, resort guests are transported to their luxury accommodations by boat. Every suite boasts a private plunge pool and a waterfront location (either lagoon, canal or beach) and some have outdoor showers. The one-of-a-kind spa echoes the resort’s natural tropical aquatic theme with a stunning locale on its own island and indigenous treatments.

In addition to the impressive facility, the key here is standout service. Even in the locker rooms, attendants fall over themselves to bring you slippers in your size and ply you with an array of complimentary food and drink.
Lavish locker rooms offer every imaginable bell and whistle, including a sauna, steam grotto, hot and cold plunge pools, and sensory showers with mist, sound and chromatherapy.
The escapist island includes its own quiet and secluded adult-oriented pool, an outdoor meditation area and fitness center.
Among the unique offerings, the luxe spa also has its own temazcal, a traditional Mayan sweat lodge made of local clay and volcanic rock.
A full-service salon and a well-stocked spa shop round out the ample amenities.

Things to Know

Sense is located on its own small island, reachable by crossing a bridge within the resort.
Popular treatments can be included into various two- to five-hour packages.
Spa guests get full access to the hotel’s wine and tequila lists; food, too, can be ordered and you’ll find that many people extend a spa visit into the better part of a poolside day.
The exceptional locker room facilities are available to all guests, with or without spa treatments, as is the state-of-the-art gym, also overflowing with perks from headphones and icy towels, to water bottles and a Nespresso coffee machine.
Save time to soak up the spa’s Kuxtal Sensory Garden. The Treatments

The vast slate of treatments range from standards like deep tissue and hot stone massages to locally influenced treatments inspired by Mayan rituals and performed with indigenous ingredients like agave, chaya, eucalyptus and herbs.
Many services place as much importance on healing as relaxing, such as an organic facial combining purely natural products (based on flowers and fruits known for their nourishing skin properties) and a stress-relieving massage.
Escape Together: Sun & Moon Journey is a three-hour session including round-trip boat transfers from suite to spa island, a Mayan cocoa scrub, herb bath and signature massage in an open air palapa.

The Rooms

The design of the 17,000-square-foot space is integrated into the surrounding tropical environment.
Many of the 12 treatment villas have an open-air element and are scattered throughout the island overlooking vegetation and water canals.
The villas encircle a beautiful cenote, a type of natural well found in the Yucatan Peninsula, highly revered as a major water source in both ancient and modern times.
Eight two-level suites are cantilevered over canals and each features its own private treatment room.
