No matter what time of year you're visiting Auckland, I think it pays to pack a rain jacket. You never know when the clouds are going to come over and hit the city with a downpour. And with only a moment's notice. That's my number one item to make room for.
Following that, it depends what you're coming to town for and when. New Zealand is a pretty relaxed place, you won't ever need anything too fancy (unless, of course, you've got a special occasion lined up).
In summer, flip flops (or "jandals" as the Kiwi's say) are a staple. You'll probably want to pack some swimwear (Kiwi: "togs") and some sensible walking shoes so you can make the most of the great outdoors.
In winter, it gets pretty cold, but it doesn't snow (unless you get out of town), so a warm jacket and some thick socks should do the trick.
If you forget to bring something, I find Auckland to be a pretty practical place, so you will always be able to find something to buy locally.
