There are about 55 volcanoes making up the Auckland Volcanic Field. As a result, this North Island region is pretty mountainous. This isn't such good news for bike riders, or haters of hills, however, it's a blessing for getting a great view. Make your way to the top of Mt Eden by foot (it will take about 15 minutes) or by car. But, for the very best view of the city sky line, catch a ferry, or kayak out, to Rangitoto. This is the most recent volcano to erupt in Auckland about 700 years ago so it's a pretty interesting hike that will take about an hour. There's also a tractor taking up the folks who aren't keen to walk it. From the top you'll get picture perfect views of the city.
If you're stuck downtown, get yourself up to the top of the Sky Tower, or cruise over the Auckland Harbour Bridge to check out the city.
