Auckland is a late-night city, and there are dozens of clubs and late-night bars scattered throughout the central district. As befits such a diverse city, you can find something for every taste. There are chic, high-end venues like Spy Bar or Club DELUXE, as well as dance-and-DJ showcases like Devo Nightclub, Flight Lounge, Zen, or The Lounge on High Street. Auckland also boasts some memorable theme venues, like the Soviet-themed Lenin Bar on Prince's Wharf, or the nearby Freddy's Ice House, where all furniture is made of carved ice and patrons are given thick parkas upon entering. SkyCity Hotel also has a few all-night bars popular with visitors, and the complex's casino stays busy late into the evening.
For a night out in Auckland you’ve got a handful of cool hubs.
Downtown, the Britomart precinct is buzzing right now. There are a bunch of groovy bars down there, including one of my Auckland favourites, 1885. For a great feed and a couple of beers visit the Northern Steamship (thinking about the pulled pork makes my mouth water). If it’s a warm evening get yourself a seat on the roof of Tyler Street Garage.
A short bus ride, or a 20 minute walk, out of town you’ll find another popular night spot among locals, Ponsonby Road. There’s plenty going on – my pick is Golden Dawn. A few other notables are the Chapel which is always heaving (and has great pizzas), Longroom (with a spacious front courtyard) or SPQR (for late night dining and cocktails).
If you feel like dancing get yourself to Auckland’s red light district on K Road. Just strolling down this colourful strip late at night is an experience.
