A luxe wellness journey in Beijing
7 Treatment Rooms
At Waldorf Astoria Spa, Beijing, the journey is not the destination — it’s where your spa transformation begins. From the hotel lobby, you are led by a member of the wellness team through a series of corridors to a private elevator reserved for spa goers alone. It’s a VIP experience that feels a bit like being in on the best-kept secret in town.
Only by embarking on this “journey” can you reach the spa, an area of the hotel inaccessible by any other means. Here, privacy and serenity are absolute. Within a low-lit, Chinese-inspired pre-treatment chamber, you are offered revitalizing and seasonal wellness tea (a different blend is offered to men and women), then a soothing herbal foot bath followed by an aromatherapy consultation with products from Aromatherapy Associates, an esteemed British brand. By the time your actual treatment starts, you’ll be relaxed and ready to reap the benefits of it.
Entering any of the seven spa suites is akin to becoming a master of your own secluded world of wellness. Transitioning from a generous private steam shower and powder room, you wash and don robes before entering a cocoon-like massage and treatment chamber. The soothing East-meets-West aesthetic oozes warm terracotta tones with touches of porcelain and bamboo. Restful music, feather-soft gowns and muted lighting merge to impart a womb-like sense of serenity and security.
Expect ingredients used during the myriad treatments to be meticulously sourced. For example, the 60-minute Rose Cocoon body care treatment uses only imported petals from Bulgaria, renowned for its rich natural oils. Other services at the Beijing spa employ organic jujube, tea-tree and almond oils for intense nourishment, plus reviving scrubs made with olive seeds that gently exfoliate.
Signature rituals use a mixture of Chinese deep-tissue massage techniques combined with Swedish and Thai wellness methods. There’s a focus on traditional Chinese medical concepts of the body’s seasonal needs, which means treatments will evolve and adapt according to the time of year. The Escape service is a 90-minute journey designed for those afflicted by seasonal complaints, or those who spend too much time in stuffy or polluted environments. Via a process of inhalation and pressure point massage through hot stones and hollow bamboo manipulation, the airways are opened up to maximize effective breathing. A revitalizing scalp massage is the final touch of the treatment. Spa specialists will talk you through a range of body massages and body-care rituals to find the ideal treatment for your needs.
There’s also a variety of facials available for both men and women, including oxygen-infused facials by Intraceuticals that target aging — up high on the list of priorities of pretty much every spa goer in the East or the West.
