Though the villages of Cinque Terre are built upon vineyards, it is surprisingly difficult to arrange a visit to one without hiring a tour guide. Here are a few cellars offering tours, wine tastings and great views:
1. Dau Cila (Riomaggiore). The Dau Cila wine cellar is a favorite among wine enthusiasts, thanks to its extensive selection of local wines. From the row boats lined up outside to the striking white interior, vaulted ceilings and brick walls, the setting seems to effortlessly embody northern Italy.
2. Cantina Cinque Terre (Manarola). Available by appointment only, visits to the Cantina Cinque Terre gives you a behind-the-scenes look at some of the area's most sophisticated production techniques. Try the famed "Cinque Terre" dry white wine as well as the esteemed sciacchetrà. Afterwards, take time to browse through the nearby Sciacchetrà Museum that explains the process used to make this unique wine.
3. Enoteca Ciak (Monterroso). Centrally located in Monterosso, Enoteca Ciak is home to some of the best sciacchetrà and limoncino in Cinque Terre. Stop in for a sample, and don't leave without trying the homemade jam, dried tomatoes, olive oil and fresh squid-ink pasta.
