In a city known for its barbecue and Tex-Mex, it may be surprising to learn that Dallas is teeming with fantastic restaurants. Whether you're looking for classic French cuisine or upscale Tex-Mex, there are plenty of eateries to choose from.

If you're craving an exquisite tasting menu filled with mouthwatering dishes, we suggest snagging a table at The Mansion Restaurant. Tucked away in the Turtle Creek neighborhood, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant serves up French cuisine alongside one of the best wine lists in town. Another place that would more than satisfy that gastronomic craving is The French Room downtown. As you can deduce from its name, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant features classic French dishes — think roasted rack of lamb and rich soufflé. And if those two don't get your taste buds excited, try Hôtel St. Germain Restaurant in Uptown.

For steak, I go to Charlie Palmer or Al Biernat’s. For foodie stuff, I go to Lucia. I also go to Driftwood, Smoke.

I always love my friends’ restaurants. I love Stephan Pyles’ restaurant. He and I started off together back in the ’80s. He and I are still standing. We still have restaurants, so I think that’s something to say. Definitely a big nod to Stephan and his restaurant. Definitely Kent Rathbun’s Abacus and Jasper’s.

When I’m off, my two boys and I are probably down-beating it a little bit. Definitely Nick Badovinus’ restaurant, Neighborhood Services — visit that a lot. Hillstone — George Biel’s offshoot of Houston’s — and R&D Kitchen, love those restaurants and visit those quite a bit. I go to the E Bar a lot, Eddie Cervantes’ restaurant for great Tex-Mex. For Italian, Bugatti, which is like going back in time for an Italian restaurant. We go there quite a bit. Zee, the maître d’, is the best. Kirin Court for some Chinese food, if I want to get a Peking duck over on Richardson there. That’s kind of home ground right there.

Also we can’t forget the steakhouses. Chamberlain’s, Del Frisco’s, Nick & Sam’s, those are three great steakhouses that I go to all the time also.

And then Nobu, for great sushi. You can’t beat Nobu. I know that he’s not standing there making it, but he’s got a good system and it works. That’s a great one.

This French fine-dining restaurant inside the historic Hotel Adolphus will wow you with its sophisticated prix fixe menu and opulent French decor. If you're in town for several days, add Dallas' other Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurants — Stephan Pyles, Fearing's, The Mansion Restaurant and Abacus — to your itinerary.

For a great place to go for dinner or a late night snack, check out the very popular restaurant Sfuzzi in Uptown. Sfuzzi is known for its fresh, innovative Italian foods, and lively social setting.

When it comes to top-notch dining in Dallas, the options are just as vast as the city’s network of highways. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Downtown or the in the recesses of the suburbs, great eats are never hard to find.

Chef Kent Rathbun has made Jasper’s a required stop for foodies. Located in the Shops at Legacy, the chic eatery has a quaint patio great for people watching. The menu changes seasonally, but the rotisserie prime rib, paired with a “loaded” Yukon Gold baked potato is a staple that was voted a Dallas best.

Charlie Palmer is another hotspot, located in the heart of Downtown. It shares space with the Joule Hotel and incorporates the stylishly-executed industrial energy theme of the hotel. Massive propellers are recessed in the ceiling and the dining room is bathed in rich, natural hues. On the menu, the lobster mac and cheese is a guest favorite. Be sure to try the duo of Berkshire pork served with house-made sausage, bitter greens, beer braised spelt and mustard creme.

Finally, what’s a visit to Dallas without barbeque? Chef Tim Byres' Smoke is one of the most popular places in town. Priding itself on “homegrown, handmade, local eats,” Smoke specializes in farm to table fare. Hypnotic aromas greet visitors even before they enter the parking lot, tempting the senses of what’s to come. Of the medium plates, try the pit-roasted cabrito and fresh masa with goats milk cajeta and green apple salsa verde. When it’s really time to throw down with a large plate, the Texas barbeque coffee-cured beef brisket with bread and butter pickles and mustard seed potato salad is boot-slappin’ good.
