To celebrate a special occasion — or just a special meal — in the Mile High City, head downtown to Restaurant Kevin Taylor. Denver native Kevin Taylor found the perfect space for his eponymous restaurant; the dramatic Hotel Teatro (which happens to be located across the street from the Denver Center for Performing Arts) is an apt backdrop for chef Taylor’s theatrical dishes. The chef designed the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant himself, in fact; his pièces de résistance are the drop chandeliers sparkling with abalone shell and Swarovski crystal.
More than just theatrical, the seasonal menus at Restaurant Kevin Taylor burst with local ingredients and fresh flavor combinations influenced by French, Asian and Southwestern cuisine. You can order à la carte or choose a multicourse tasting menu with or without wine pairings (there’s an impressive cellar). Vegetarians, meanwhile, will be happy with their own menu; they can skip the foie gras mousse terrine with black currants, celeriac, peanuts and dubbel beer gel and instead enjoy something like a root vegetable and chestnut tortellini. Whichever menu you order from, you can count on having one of the finest meals Denver has to offer.
I like New Saigon a lot. My sons love the Dungeness crab — all slick with garlic and onion. It’s just a fun experience there to over order, dig in with chopsticks, drink those gelatin bubble drinks and go home completely satiated. I like ChoLon [Modern Asian Bistro]. It’s innovative food in a beautiful setting. I like Cherry Creek Grill — I know I shouldn’t say that because it’s a chain (it’s the Hillstone Restaurant Group), but they do a great job. We go there because I know what I’m going to get there — the lighting is perfect, the food is consistent, it’s comfortable. I love the French dip. Our family used to go about once a month, but since they took the fish sandwich off the menu, it’s more like every six months or so. And I like Sushi Den. I think it’s some of the best sushi in the country. Sushi Den has the best fish I’ve ever had — cooked, raw, New York, San Francisco, whatever — period.
