Most hotels in Des Moines are about practicality rather than luxury. Still, here are Forbes Travel Guide editor’s favorite places to stay in Des Moines:
1. Butler House on Grand. This elegant bed and breakfast, across the street from the Des Moines Art Center, has sumptuously appointed rooms, with the décor in each one created by a local designer. Details in some rooms include fireplace and whirlpool tub. Beds are very comfortable, making this a nice spot for a romantic weekend getaway.
2. Des Moines Marriott Downtown. Soaring over downtown, this hotel offers a convenient location for many top attractions, including the State Capitol and farmers’ market on nearby Court Avenue. It also is connected to downtown’s skywalk, a not insignificant consideration if you’re visiting in winter. The hotel features a large fitness center and an indoor pool.
3. Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel. Housed in a historic building with plenty of character, including redbrick walls and views of the downtown skyline from rooms on the higher floors. The hotel restaurant is pleasant, and the bar is a soothing spot to grab a drink before heading out for Des Moines nightlife.
4. Suites at 800 Locust. A true luxury hotel, housed in a former businessmen’s club, you’ll find attentive staff and plenty of amenities here. Roomy suites may include gas fireplaces or whirlpool tubs, as well as interesting architectural flourishes. The hotel whips up a delectable breakfast in the first-floor Cosmopolitan Lounge, which at night is transformed into a stylish drinking den. Some of downtown’s best restaurants are just a short walk away.
