Tucson offers a rare combination of delightful Western living, colorful desert, mountain scenery and cosmopolitan culture. It is one of several U.S. cities that developed under four flags. The Spanish standard flew first over the Presidio of Tucson, built to withstand Apache attacks in 1776. Later, Tucson flew the flags of Mexico, the Confederate States and finally, the United States. Today, Tucson is a resort area, an educational center, headquarters for the Coronado National Forest and a place of business for several large industries. The city has many shops, restaurants, resorts and attractions.
