As the Director of Guest Relations at Meadowood, Rob Harrison dedicates himself to making certain that his guests and members of The Reserve feel welcome and at home. After all, many of them consider Meadowood to be their second home. Harrison is the designated liason to lodging and services at Meadowood for members of The Reserve. Harrison, who is known for his ability to secure nearly unattainable tables at most of Napa Valley and San Francisco’s hottest restaurants, prides himself in the relationships he has built with his guests and members of The Reserve. He began his career in hospitality at the University of Utah. Before beginning his tenure at Meadowood, he worked at the Five-Star Stein Eriksen Lodge in Deer Valley, as well as two luxury properties in San Francisco. As a Napa Valley resident, Harrison has insider knowledge that allows him to plan first-class experiences that make his guests come back to the hotel again and again.

    What is the food presentation like at The Restaurant at Meadowood?

    Chef Christopher Kostow employs a flawless, innovative technique that never steals focus from the food. "Some chefs use technique to make things look unbelievably unique," he explains. "We put that on its head and say, 'We have all this ability and know-how and tools. Why don't we use technique to make food taste unbelievably good?'" One example the chef cites is an unassuming amuse-bouche, the baked potato parfait. "It looks pretty basic — just a white cup with a white espuma [foam] on top and a little caviar and oyster," Kostow says. "But it actually has six layers of potato goodness in each bite. People taste it and they love it."

    What is the chef at The Restaurant at Meadowood’s food philosophy?

    The Restaurant at Meadowood offers a fine dining experience in the country where the best traditions of Napa Valley are wedded with a modern, enlightened approach to cuisine inspired by our award-winning chef Christopher Kostow. "My goal is to be evocative — not provocative," Kostow explains, describing his culinary philosophy.

    Who is the chef at The Restaurant at Meadowood and what is his background?

    The chef at The Restaurant at Meadowood is Christopher Kostow. Kostow, a Chicago native, trained in kitchens far and wide: from a Paris bistro to the noted Le Jardin des Sens in Montpellier. Upon returning to the States, Kostow worked as sous chef under Daniel Humm in San Francisco. He soon became top toque at Chez TJ in Mountain View, Calif., garnering the restaurant many accolades, including a coveted spot on Food & Wine’s list of “Top Ten Dishes of the Year” in 2007.
    Upon arriving at Meadowood in February of 2008, he was nominated for Best Chef, Pacific, by the James Beard Foundation and named as one of Food & Wine magazine’s Best New Chefs 2009. Under his tenure, The Restaurant has won Four Stars from Forbes Travel Guide.

    What five things do we love most about Meadowood Napa Valley?

    Among the many things to experience at Meadowood Napa Valley, these are a few that our guests appreciate most:

    1. The Restaurant at Meadowood. Chef Christopher Kostow and The Restaurant at Meadowood earned three Michelin stars for 2012. Chef Kostow was the second American-born chef (after Thomas Keller) to receive the honor. The Restaurant at Meadowood offers a casually elegant dining experience featuring a modern approach to Napa Valley cuisine by Kostow that is approachable, dynamic, evocative and playful.

    2. Wine Education at Meadowood with Master Sommelier Gilles de Chambure, MS. For guests who seek to deepen their appreciation and wine knowledge, de Chambure offers private education sessions, exploring topics including winery architecture and history, or a more focused look at Napa Valley’s famed cabernets as well as winery excursions.

    3. Spend an afternoon spanning two centuries of golf, exclusively at Meadowood Napa Valley. First, return to the era of Bobby Jones and play nine holes with authentic hickory-shafted clubs and replica gutty golf balls, all of which were used from the late 1800s to the 1930s. Back in the 1900s, players only had six wooden clubs and no yardage markers. Hickory golf takes away the formatted approach to the game — players have to calculate angles and position more closely than when playing modern golf. Soon after, you can be transported right back to the 21st century. Meadowood currently has the only course in California to offer both TrackMan Pro and the new TrackMan Range technology in our new Golf Permformance Studio. Golf Pro Doug Pike introduces you to the most current radar technology and teaching methods being introduced to the golf world.

    4. Play croquet. Meadowood offers two championship croquet lawns, as well as our new Resident Croquet Pro Mike McDonnell. Not only does Mike have strong family ties to Meadowood (his dad introduced croquet to Meadowood Founding Partner H. William (Bill) Harlan), but he’s also an accomplished bass player, having toured with jazz great Maynard Ferguson and Sir Tom Jones. A Croquet Pro, musician and even pilot, meet Mike for a lesson on the Jerry Stark Memorial Croquet Lawns.

    5. Tennis and hiking the property. In addition to having seven tennis courts, run by Meadowood’s resident Tennis Professional Doug King, hiking at Meadowood is an activity that guests of varying fitness levels may also enjoy. The Meadowood Health Spa and horticulture teams expanded the hiking trail to approximately 4.5 miles. Along the way, hikers may see Northern California wildlife, bird watch — more than 106 species of birds have been identified at Meadowood-and meditate at various benches created just for that purpose.
