Capella Sydney

Enlightened downtown elegance
VERIFIED LUXURY

Luxury meets lineage in enrapturing fashion at the newly opened Capella Sydney. Housed in a renovated Baroque-style government building from the early 20th century, the thoughtful stay embraces the city’s complicated past, highlighting First Nations’ history and traditions at every possible turn.

Stretching the length of a city block in Sydney’s Sandstone Precinct, the gingerbread-hued hotel marks the debut of Capella Hotels and Resorts in Australia and its first location outside of Asia. Perched just minutes from famous sites such as Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden, Capella Sydney is a prime perch from which to explore.

While the usual tours and experiences can be booked here, you’d be missing out on what the property does best. Storytelling is the beating heart of the Sydney hotel, from the nightly Echoes of Eternity cocktail ritual to spa treatments inspired by Indigenous cures. It’s these thoughtful touches that elevate Capella Sydney into a category all its own.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Service is second to none at Capella Sydney, where a host of Capella Culturists work tirelessly to curate your perfect Sydney experience. Before arrival, you’ll receive a call from a staffer asking about your personal preferences in food, arts and history from which they will craft your ideal itinerary.
  • In addition to the hotel, Capella plans to open a high-end retail- and restaurant-filled venue in the adjacent Department of Lands building. Currently under renovation, the impressive structure should be an even bigger boon to the already acclaimed property.
  • Occupying the original top-floor art gallery, a 65-foot heated pool beautifully lit by vintage copper lanterns invites you to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The quiet space remains tranquil since it’s reserved exclusively for hotel guests.
  • The top-floor Auriga Spa takes inspiration from the phases of the moon to help you reconnect to the earth’s natural rhythms. Indulge in treatments featuring plant-based skincare brand Synthesis Organics or opt for the Connect to Country ritual that offers healing vibrations from a variety of hot stones gathered with permission from Aboriginal elders across Australia.
  • Food isn’t an afterthought at Capella Sydney, where a culinary program imagined by chef Brent Savage and sommelier Nick Hildebrandt deliciously showcases Australia’s natural bounty. Savor locally sourced seafood and steaks at Brasserie 1930, cocktails with Australian spirits at McRae Bar and an exquisite afternoon tea at eye-popping Aperture.

The Look

  • Take your time strolling the thoughtfully adorned halls of Capella Sydney. The hotel is home to a carefully curated collection of 1,500 pieces by 65 Australian artists, each with their own tale to tell.
  • As you step inside the marble lobby to the check-in desk, take note of the four painted panels covering the restored brass directory boards. The poignant pieces by Waanyi artist Judy Watson depict the tenuous first contact between Europeans and natives.
  • The nightly Echoes of Eternity cocktail ritual takes place in The Living Room, a cozy space featuring a fascinating reproduction of one of the earliest maps of Sydney Harbour. The map does double duty as artwork and a display for artifacts found during an archaeological dig under the building.
  • The celebration of Australian heritage continues to Capella Sydney’s 192 rooms and suites. Designed by Melbourne-based BAR Studios, the spaces feature local wood, wool and stone perfectly punctuated by funky mid-century modern chandeliers and curated coffee table books.
