A haute boutique stay in Houston

312 Rooms / 26 Suites

Texan in spirit, bold in design, Hotel Derek is a modern boutique option in Houston’s hotel scene. Fresh off of a multimillion-dollar renovation completed in March 2013, this 2002 hotel sparkles from inside and out with new colors, art and furnishings by Dallas-based design firm Flick Mars.

Guest rooms mix modern architectural chic with a 1960s kitsch. Bold, bright orange textiles infuse a pop of color against rich wood elements. In lieu of a small sitting area, a long banquette runs the width of the floor-to-ceiling window, the perfect place from which to lounge and admire the cityscapes outside. For the most spectacular views, book a sky deluxe room, terrace suite or penthouse suite to enjoy unobstructed, panoramic vistas of the city.

Technology is also big at Hotel Derek. A cool “Pic and Post” iPad photo station is set up in the lobby for you to take selfies, which will automatically post to the hotel’s Facebook page. Elsewhere in the space, LCD screens showing clips from old movies and other artsy images form a mosaic.

For dining, make sure to indulge in the Hotel Derek’s fantastic buffet breakfast, served every morning on cast-iron skillets in Texas-sized abundance (the selection includes freshly made Belgian waffles, eggs Benedict and plump grilled sausages). For on-the-go guests, a full-service Starbucks bar is located in the Vin Bar for your morning or afternoon coffee fix. The Starbucks morphs into a Caffeine Bar in the later hours of the day, when the baristas will concoct custom pick-me-up beverages with an energy drink like Red Bull or Monster.

If you end up being too wired and happen to stay up all night, the Houston hotel is ready to serve as well. Executive chef Shannen Tune’s new menu of gourmet hamburgers includes his signature Hangover Burger — 10 ounces of black Angus beef with cheddar cheese, bacon, potato hash and a sunny-side-up egg — that has been known to cure all ailments and is sure to knock your socks off.
