When you come to Houston, unless you have a friend who will be your tour guide, you probably want to rent a car. Houston is much more accessible if you have your own means of transportation.

Also, become familiar with the attractions or things you want to see and do. This will help you when planning appropriate accommodation.

If you're visiting because of the Medical Center, you will want to stay at the Hotel Zaza or somewhere closer to the downtown area. If you are on business that is located on the Energy Corridor on the West side of Houston, it will behoove you to stay closer to that area and avoid traffic. If you have friends in the Memorial area, stay plan to stay near CityCentre, and if your main purpose is to go shopping, stay in the Galleria.

Houston has a wonderful dining scene, but it's also spread out all over. For more ethnic eats, you'll have to visit the Southwest side of town, which is approximately 30 minutes from central Houston.

The music, theater and arts scene is located more centrally near the downtown area. You'll want to stay in that general vicinity at places like The Four Seasons, The Hotel Icon, The Alden Hotel, or the Magnolia. The same goes for big concerts and sports events, which are primarily located at Toyota Center or Minute Maid Park.
