If you’re in the mood to let loose at a raucous all-night beach party, our Forbes Travel Guide editors suggest taking a quick 30-minute boat ride from Koh Samui to Koh Pha Ngan. Time your visit right and you can experience the infamous Full Moon Party in all its free-spirited glory on the island’s Haad Rin Beach, but if you miss the monthly bash you can still get a dose of beachy bacchanalia at the twice-monthly Half Moon Festival, held in Ban Tai Village. Note that boats run back and forth to Koh Samui throughout the night during the former party, but cease operations at normal times during the latter.
Of course, there’s more to Koh Pha Ngan than just parties. The island is a great place for hiking, kayaking and lounging on secluded beaches in the somewhat hard-to-get-to northern region, and is also an excellent base for snorkeling and scuba-diving excursions.
