A lush garden escape in Los Cabos
Tucked inside a garden oasis, Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star The Spa at Las Ventanas is a serene retreat inside one of Mexico’s most discreetly luxurious resorts. Behind a small and unassuming entryway await treatment cabanas and a magnificent a circular solarium where you’ll enjoy post-service sips and nibbles as you relax to the melodic sounds of the wind blowing through crystal bowls.
Completely renovated after Hurricane Odile, the spa at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort reopened in mid-2015 as a brand-new Zen escape.
Spa services at Las Ventanas are themed around the four elements — earth, water, air and fire — with each designed to create a certain feeling or mood. The spa uses local ingredients, like the “moonflower” (from the pitaya plant indigenous to Baja that blooms at night), fragrant pineapple, regional honey and, of course, tequila.
Standard treatments like massages, facials and wraps are executed to a T, but we also love the emphasis on holistic therapies. Choose from services like Spiritual Chilam, where you’ll enjoy meditation with crystals, or the evening twilight ceremony, held daily at sundown, which employs crystal singing bowls, sage smoke and shaman prayers.
As with everything at Las Ventanas, a highlight of the Los Cabos spa is the excellent service. This Rosewood property prides itself on staff tenure, and many therapists have been with the spa a decade or more.
During the closure for Odile, staff members took the time to learn new skills. Massage technicians trained for more than 100 hours each to practice the spa’s new signature massage, a 90-minute ritual that combines an aromatherapy blend of your choice along with fluid, flowing long strokes and a blend of Breema, shiatsu, Esalen, Thai, Swedish and Indonesian techniques. The experience is magical.
The luxury spa is an oasis seen only by guests and a select few — and that’s a good thing. Hidden away on the hillside, the spa grounds are accessible only by walking through the reception area and changing rooms and entering a private garden, where you’ll find his-and-hers steam rooms, outdoor showers, cold plunges and a palapa-topped solarium.
Treatment rooms are standalone garden cabanas behind dark wood gates, which contrast beautifully with the resort’s stark whitewashed walls. Each is spacious and serene with minimal décor and natural accents. Some boast their own garden patios with deep soaking tubs and showers, perfect for rinsing off or lingering post-treatment.
Of course, should you desire, treatments are available in-room or in a beachside cabana, but we’d find it hard to turn down a visit to the spa itself.
The vibe at Las Ventanas is decidedly relaxed, but sometimes you just can’t help wanting to glam up a bit for a nice evening. The Salon is the spot to get beach chic; unwind in zero-gravity chairs while partaking in perks like the ultimate shampoo — where you’ll have light and sound therapy along with an aromatherapy scalp massage followed by a penetrating wash and conditioning.
Other favorites include the Heart in Hand manicure, where you are pampered with a hand massage and mask in addition to polishing and nail shaping.
