The landscape like around Bernardus Winery lush and lovely. The winery sits in the heart of the Carmel Valley near Carmel-by-the-Sea in Monterey County, a noted American wine-growing region. It has a cool climate, with misty mornings, followed by sunny days and foggy evenings. It’s one of the most beautiful areas of California — if not the United States, with the mix of hills and mountains covered with pines, native oaks and scrub bushes. While the tasting room is in a commercial area of Carmel Valley, the winery itself — which is not open to the public — is in a hilly area called Cachagua, a Native American word for “hidden water.” The Carmel River twists through the valley and then there’s the Pacific coastline with its rocky cliffs and white sandy beaches. The Carmel Valley exudes a rustic beauty.
