There are some great places to visit in a day trip from Mumbai. Three of our top picks are:
1. Elephanta Caves
If you have never visited these ancient caves about an hour from the coast of Mumbai then you are definitely missing out a spectacular site. The stunning carvings in these caves depict both Hindu and Buddhist deities, and were created between the 5th and 8th centuries. You can reach the caves by taking a ferry from the Gateway of India, the round trip will take you about 4 to 5 hours.
The city of Pune is an easy day trip from Mumbai and well worth a visit. It is the second largest city in Maharashtra and is known as the cultural capital of the state. Home to the Osho Ashram, you can visit this world renowned institution, see the Palace Fort of Shaniwarwada or the historical Aga Khan Palace, before heading back down the expressway to Mumbai.
If you enjoy the romanticism of driving through vineyards, then head to Nashik for a day, India’s premier wine region. You can either just enjoy the surrounds, or stop at a few of the local wineries for a tasting. Some wineries worth dropping into include Sula Vineyards, York Winery and Chateau d’Ori. Each will give you a taste of their new world wines in their well appointed tasting rooms, or stop into one of the smaller vineyards that you see and ask them if they will take you for a tour.
