The Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum is located in the downtown region of Gamdevi, not far from Malabar Hill. This mansion, now a museum and research centre, was owned by one of Gandhi’s close friends who hosted him during his visits to Mumbai between 1917 and 1934, making this property the focal point of Gandhi’s political activities during that time.
The Museum now has an interesting library that has about 40,000 publications focused on Gandhian thought and freedom movements. There is an audtiroium that shows films and recordings of Gandhi’s speeches on request, and a glimpse into his life in his room that has been preserved to show how this eminent man lived. In the Picture Gallery, the walls are lined with pictures, press clippings and information that documents Gandhi’s life and the struggle that he underwent that eventually led to India’s independence.
The Museum is a popular tourist site in Mumbai, and has been visited by Barack Obama and Martin Luther King. It is open each weekday from 9.30am to 5.30pm.You can get to Mani Bhavan by car, which will take about 40 minutes from the Gateway of India or Colaba.
