The Gateway of India is a must-see for anyone who is visiting Mumbai for the first time. This iconic structure was built in the early 1900s to commemorate King George V and Queen Mary visiting Mumbai and is now one of Mumbai’s most famous landmarks. If you approach Mumbai by boat, it will be the first thing you notice on shore, and also makes for a beautiful photograph when departing from here to visit the Elephanta Caves. So if you can, one of the best ways to see the Gateway of India is from the water.
It is also good fun to walk around the square leading to this monument, here you will find hundreds of street vendors selling everything from over-sized balloons to delicious snacks. There will also be plenty of people offering to take your photograph with this iconic monument in the background. Just wander around and enjoy the atmosphere, get close to the Gateway of India and take in the detailed craftsmanship that symbolises the era of the British Raj in India.
