The best shopping in Northern Idaho can be found in the historic downtown of Coeur d'Alene. The quaint and picturesque Sherman Avenue is lined with shops, boutiques, galleries and cafes, all within a block or two from Lake Coeur d’Alene. The art galleries feature an eclectic mix of styles, including Northwest landscapes and Native American themes. Wherever you go, you are never far from a café or a restaurant that offers outdoor seating eight months out of the year.

The Resort Plaza Shops is a stylish indoor mall located between The Coeur d’Alene Resort and Sherman Avenue. Internationally recognized organic farmer, author, environmental activist and Idaho resident Mary Jane Butters has a retail store in The Plaza Shops, Mary Jane’s Farm, that features many of the elegant home décor items that she sells in her increasingly popular catalog.

For those who like to treasure hunt, be sure to visit 4th Street, just a few blocks north of downtown. It is simply fascinating to wander up and down the street through the thrift stores and antique shops. Be sure to stop at the Paris Flea Market, which has shabby-chic refurbished furnishings with a French flair. Another must-see store on 4th Street is Cisco’s, which has a stunning collection of folk art, Indian artifacts, Navajo rugs and Western antiques. You might even think that you are in a museum when you encounter such rare items as the sword and wedding outfit of General George Armstrong Custer, or a copy of the 1865 newspaper announcing the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

To meet some of the people and experience local flavors of Northern Idaho, a visit to the Wednesday Farmers Market is highly recommended. Open from mid-May to the end of October on 5th Street, the market is a fun place to shop for arts and crafts, listen to local musicians and to sample a wide array of locally grown and raised produce, meats and artisanal cheeses.

Sandpoint also has a quaint downtown with one-of-a-kind art galleries and shops that focus on outdoor adventure and sports. Coldwater Creek has a beautiful retail shop right on 1st Avenue.
