Osaka is ideally situated in the heart of Kansai, and so makes a great hub from which to explore the surrounding area. Kyoto is the cultural capital of Japan, and at only 30 minutes away by train, getting there and back is a simple endeavor.
Likewise, the ancient capital of Nara, famous for its giant Buddha and friendly sika deer is less than an hour away by train. Kobe is a sophisticated and cosmopolitan city, and the ropeway and easy day hike up Mt. Rokko are a refreshing escape from the urban sprawl. Slightly further down the coast, Himeji Castle with its famous whitewashed walls is a national icon and makes for a great daytrip from Osaka.
