A city of arts, dramatic desert landscapes and world-class resorts and golf courses, the best things to do in Phoenix take advantage of local culture and the weather that's ideal eight months of the year. For a blend of both, start here:
1. Take a hike. Phoenix's landscape is unique, with towering saguaro cacti and blue skies nearly every day — one of the best ways to see the city is from the top of Camelback Mountain. Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback is a local favorite. The bird's-eye view of the city rewards everyone from novice to expert trekkers — just don't forget a bottle of water.
2. Hit the links. With more than 100 courses, both public and private, Phoenix is a golfer's paradise. The beauty of the desert is a central feature of the best courses in the area. For stunning mountain views and a championship course, head to the Legacy Golf Resort nestled against South Mountain. A more affordable — but no less gorgeous — course is the Raven Golf Club. Pine trees, desert landscaping and mountain views await at this service-oriented public course.
3. Relax at a world-class spa. Many of Phoenix's breathtaking spas highlight the beauty and tranquility of the desert. Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Aji Spa at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort is unique among them — offering a menu of treatments inspired by Native American traditions, including those of the local Pima tribe.
4. Check out First Friday. This downtown Phoenix art walk claims to be the nation's largest. To kick off the first weekend of every month, galleries and museums throw open their doors showcasing local artists, while live bands play all over the downtown area. Should you miss it, many galleries open again for the more mellow third Friday, while Scottsdale hosts a weekly art walk every Thursday.
