Children don’t care about high thread-count sheets and designer décor, but there are certain hotel amenities that make them jump up and down. Here are a few San Francisco area hotels that are best for families:

Kids are VIPs quite literally at the Hotel Del Sol, a colorful Joie de Vivre property with 57 rooms in the Marina/Cow Hollow neighborhood. They’ll love frocklicking and swinging on the hammocks in the palm-shaded courtyard,  swimming in the heated pool or warm milk and cookies every afternoon. Children can borrow toys and games from the hotel’s collection; during summertime they might find a pair of bright Hotel Del Sol sunglasses in their size. The hotel also has a special family suite with a separate children’s room and check out the promotional offer that includes California Academy of Science tickets.

Guests of all ages are pampered at the The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco. Kids staying at the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel can order from their own menu that includes Mickey pancakes, grilled cheese and bite-size pasta with butter and vegetables. Rooms in the downtown hotel have serene neutral color schemes and eclectic décor with European and Chinese furnishings, but the amenity the kids will appreciate is the Nintendo console.

The historic Claremont Hotel in Berkeley’s hills offers a number of amenities for children including a Kid’s Club drop-in, outdoor activity center with playground stations, a slide and a sand box.  If the weather is rainy, ther staff leads art projects and games. During the summertime, kids aged 5 through 10 can sign up for the Adventure Camp, a full day of games, fitness, art projects and music. They might try their hand at tennis, go on a scavenger hunt or embark on a field trip. And for family fun, head to the pool and club.

Although there are no hotels specifically designed for children a la Disneyland in San Francisco, there are a couple of places that offer kid-friendly services and amenities.

With its outdoor pool and surrounding grassy area, the Hotel Del Sol is a great place for kids. The Del Sol's decor is bright with plenty of primary colors and several suites with trundle beds and children's books and toys. There are also complimentary cookies and milk in the afternoon and a special Kids are VIPs program with a lending library and fun pool accessories.

The Hotel Metropolis has several one-of-a-kind Kids Suites with miniature furniture, bunk beds, a chalkboard wall, and toys. The experience is designed to make kids feel like Urban Explorers.
