If there were five things you had to eat or drink while you’re in San Jose, our Forbes Travel Guide editors say they’d have to be sushi, sake, wine, burritos and doughnuts.
You can check the first two items off your checklist at either Blowfish Sushi in Santana Row or TGI’s Sushi in nearby Campbell. As for wine, you’ll want to head for the hills as the wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains rival those found in Napa and Sonoma. If you can’t make it to the wineries, Vintage in Santana Row has some lovely flights of wine well worth a swirl and a sip. El Jardin and La Victoria are both recommended spots for California-style burritos.
While the state isn’t typically known for its doughnuts, Psycho Donuts is the exception to the rule. Try the “Canadian morning squeal meal,” which, in case you’re wondering, is a hearty buttermilk bar topped with maple icing, bacon bits and chocolate drizzle. With funky doughnut names like the doh-nilla — topped with Nilla wafers — and the raspberry road rash — covered with cheesecake icing and real raspberry dust — you’re sure to try at least one tasty treat you’ll never find anywhere else.
