Even though it is a steakhouse, CHAR Bar & Grill at the Hotel Indigo Shanghai is very welcoming to non-meat eaters. On the regular menu, the vegetarian options include the panzanella salad with sourdough bread, smoked cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, cucumber, grilled red peppers, buffalo mozzarella and basil, and the spinach gnocchi with pine nuts, cream and blue cheese sauce. Vegans will have a harder time — you can ask for a salad or pasta without the cheese but be sure to ask how the dressing is made. However, executive chef Julie Donohoe is happy to design a special menu for you if you book in advance with your specific dietary requirements, including designing a gluten-free menu for guests who may have gluten allergies.
