With a name that means “golden room,” Jin Xuan might have you expecting a gaudy, glitzy display. Quite the contrary: the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong has managed to convey richness without going overboard on showiness. The result is a room where a wall of windows sweeps up from the floor all the way to the high ceilings, which are inlayed with warm, gold lighting. Despite the name, the main color scheme here is a rich purple. Seats are purple and cream, tables are covered in crisp, white tablecloths and lamps are scattered around the big room casting a low-lit glow. On the walls is an array of original Chinese art, the most impressive of which is an ancient Chinese poem, written in gold writing, which stretches the length of one hallway. Even if you don’t understand the words, it’s a beautiful touch.
