Depending on how restrictive your allergies are, it can be tough eating out in Shanghai — and even more difficult in greater China. Even at places like Pelham’s, where the service is impeccable and servers attentive, it can be hard to make the severity of allergies understood. Like the rest of Shanghai’s restaurants, Pelham’s does not offer a special menu for food allergies. If your allergies are not severe, you may be okay, as long as you have your allergy information available in Chinese to be given to the kitchen staff. By the same token, allergies are not widespread in China and not well understood. Bottom line: You need to be cautious when ordering.
