Visitors from most countries need a visa to visit mainland China, and this needs to be obtained at a Chinese embassy abroad, including the one in Hong Kong, in advance of your trip. Several nationalities, however, are eligible for a single entry, five-day visa for the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone only; this does not include Guangzhou. While the U.S. is not amongst these countries, the list includes citizens of Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and most EU Countries. UK passport holders are also eligible, although this changes with frequency. Visas can be obtained at the Lo Wu border crossing, after you’ve cleared Hong Kong border control. Visas are issued on the spot, but during holidays queues are common.
