Getting from Shenzhen to Hong Kong is quite easy, though you’ll likely face crowds at the border crossings. Don’t forget that you need a visa; either a Shenzhen-only visa, which is not available to U.S. passport holders, or a general mainland China visa, which needs to be obtained in advance. You can go directly from the Hong Kong airport to Shenzhen via ferry or bus. If you’re coming from the city, comfortable coach buses over the border leave from a slew of departure points in Hong Kong’s different neighborhoods. These leave frequently and are rarely full; so you don’t need to worry about getting a seat. You can also take the subway (which connects with the Airport Express train), but this can be difficult with luggage.
