Sicily offers many traditional local products, from handicrafts to gastronomy, so you have plenty of opportunities for shopping. In Palermo, you’ll find all the products of Sicilian handicraft, such as ceramics and embroideries, while you can shop for mosaics in nearby Monreale. Artisans in Caltagirone are known for their fine majolica ceramics often fashioned in local motifs like lemons. In the Mount Etna area, there are many objects made with lava stone from the volcano, which make for a nice souvenir or jewelry piece. You should also buy products from the excellent local gastronomy. For a sweet treat, look for the traditional almond pastries or the famous soft torroncini (nougats) of Catania. Local wines are also excellent. Buy the botticelle (little bottles) in Syracuse to fill with wines like the world-famous red Nero D’Avola or sweet wines like Alcamo, Marsala and Passolato. Sicily is also renowned for its citrus groves. Purchase orange-flavored sweets and spirits in Erice or the famous Zagara fragrance, made with orange flowers, to bring home the scent of Sicily.
