Jason Pomeranc

Hotelier

New York/Los Angeles

Jason Pomeranc cofounded Thompson Hotels in 2001 with his two brothers and splashed onto the hospitality scene with the boutique hotel 60 Thompson in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. Since then, Pomeranc has put his stylish urban touch on Thompson Hotels from Miami to Los Angeles to London. He served as the co-chairman of Commune, the new hotel brand created when Thompson and Joie de Vivre merged in 2011. Pomeranc was responsible for creating both the brand identity and the physical look of the properties, while adhering to local customs and aesthetics. In 2013, Pomeranc and his partners split from Commune (though still retain several of the flagship Thompson properties) and formed a new brand: Sixty Hotels.

What are Jason Pomeranc’s favorite things to do in Los Angeles?

In L.A. there’s so much to do. I recommend getting a local to take you to his favorite places to hike or his favorite beach. It’s nice to have a local show you these things, because you can’t walk around L.A. and discover them yourselves like you can in New York. Take advantage of the few areas of pedestrian shopping.

The city is popping in February and March, when it’s awards season. That’s when it really comes alive. But July and August are nice for the beach. And fall has a good vibe, too. It all depends on what reason you are visiting.

What are Jason Pomeranc’s favorite things to do in New York?

I love walking the city. It’s just an amazing city to walk around and take it all in. Definitely visit Central Park. The thing about New York is that you don’t need to be a tourist. You can go to all the different neighborhoods, just walk and blend in and go to the local restaurants and parks.

Definitely go there during the fall, from September through Thanksgiving. The weather is still nice and all the energy is back in the city.

What does Jason Pomeranc wear when he travels?

I’m a casual dresser, but I’m a particular casual dresser. I like to dress in a more casual way, but it needs to be tailored and fit well. I often travel in jeans and a blazer. I’d like to say my style is more casual-chic than casual. It’s great being in a creative industry because I can wear things when I travel and go to business meetings that I would normally wear to work, like a great pair of jeans.

What are the best trips Jason Pomeranc has ever taken?

I would say it is the first time I’ve been to certain places, like the first time I went to Paris. It is a magnificently beautiful city. There is just no other place like it — enchanting. My first trip to Bali was really good; it was such an eye-opener. Yes, I loved the beaches and the mountains, but the service there really opened my eyes to what service and hospitality could be like. And I really enjoyed my trip to Cambodia, seeing the all temples and the country. We stay in an Aman resort there, which is just beautiful.

What are Jason Pomeranc’s favorite restaurants?

I love L’Ami Louis in Paris; it’s just a classic experience. And on the West Coast, I love Gjelina in Venice [California]. And I will always love Blue Ribbon in New York.

What are Jason Pomeranc’s favorite hotels?

I really do like all of our hotels, but 60 Thompson will always be a favorite since it was our first hotel. Belgraves, our new hotel in London, is up there. It’s our first European hotel, and I spent a lot of time in London developing it. We were first inspired by cool, old English hotels and creating Belgraves was kind of like going full circle for us.

I also like grand classical hotels, like The Peninsula Hong Kong; the grandeur of it just takes you back in time. It’s very special. And I enjoyed staying at Amanpuri in Phuket, for more of a resort hotel that’s very beautiful and well done.

What are Jason Pomeranc's favorite cities to visit?

I will always love New York and Los Angeles. I split my time between the two cities. And I love Miami for its vibrant energy — it’s so multicultural and you can’t find that unique energy anywhere else. I love London. And I really liked traveling to Israel, Bali and Thailand — the service you receive there is unbelievable. They have really mastered service, and I like to draw inspiration from those places.
