What are Kate Somerville’s on-the-go beauty secrets?

The last time I was at QVC, I was up for 42 hours straight. A lot of times I’m on-air, so I don’t like to eat. Pressed Juicery in New York and L.A. does a special juice they ship to me every time I go to QVC. I know that sounds a little diva-like, but it literally keeps me going. It keeps my skin clear, and a lot of times you can’t eat healthy when you travel, so it really keeps raw nutrients and greens in me and B vitamins. I do that and I drink a lot of water. My favorite thing to do is to take enzymes with my meals, so travel doesn’t tax my digestive system. I also take a lot of probiotics. I try to stay on the West Coast time zone so that when I come back, it’s not that hard to adjust.

What are Kate Somerville’s favorite things to do in Los Angeles?

I’m a hiker. My husband, my son and I hike a lot. We mountain bike a lot, too. Right across the street is Fryman Canyon. If you live in L.A., you know of the canyons: There’s Runyon Canyon and Fryman Canyon, and then up in Malibu there’s Sycamore, and then we also go up into the Angeles Crest. We have a little cabin in Big Bear, which is about an hour and 45 minutes east. We mountain bike at the local ski resort because you can put your mountain bike on the lift and go down, and there’s trails everywhere. And we have a boat, so we go out in the summer on the boat. Big Bear Lake is just a really simple place. I also rollerblade in Balboa Park, which is this huge park deep in the valley, and then also the boardwalk — from Manhattan Beach all the way to Venice.

What are Kate Somerville’s favorite Los Angeles hotels?

If you want the beach vibe, I would say at Shutters on the Beach down in Santa Monica or the Malibu Beach Inn. They just redid it, and it’s really beautiful, and the restaurant is gorgeous and has good food. If you want to stay in Hollywood, I would stay at The London. If you want something a little less pricey and kind of cool and off the beaten path, Le Parc Suite Hotel is where I tell a lot of my clients to stay. It’s not fancy, but its rooftop is so cute. The staff is great. It’s just a really cool, nobody-knows-about-it hotel.

What is Kate Somerville’s favorite time to visit Los Angeles?

You can come to Los Angeles anytime, but my favorite time is obviously spring. In May and June, it’s starting to get really warm and summer is coming. September and October are really beautiful here because the weather is beautiful. Those two are probably my favorite times of year here. There’s not a lot of change, but sometimes change isn’t great when it comes to weather. When we get a rainy day, we start a fire and relax — I like that easy way of living. I don’t like to fight the cold and the snow.

What are Kate Somerville’s favorite Los Angeles brunch spots?

My favorite breakfast is The Griddle Cafe on Sunset, and you have to get there really early because it is packed, like there is a line out the door. Luckily, I know the door guy because I’ve been going there for so long, and I just call ahead of time and he sneaks me right in. House Cafe, which is in Crescent Heights, has awesome breakfast. A little local place I go to is called Jinky’s Studio Cafe, and they have a lot of organic food. They have quinoa salad and a tofu scramble.

What are Kate Somerville’s favorite Los Angeles bars?

If my girlfriends and I go out, we go to a place called Dan Tana’s. We love the bar there. It’s like old-school Italian. Good Italian food actually, old-school though. You’ll see who’s who there, but you’ll see Old Hollywood and you’ll see full-on mafia-like people. It’s a weird mix. But if I do meet for drinks, I do the Soho House in Los Angeles. Great vibe. Occasionally I’ll go up on the roof of The London hotel in West Hollywood. They have a great drink menu and you see the whole city. It’s out by the pool, and they have these fire pits — it’s really magical actually.

What are Kate Somerville’s favorite Italian restaurants in Los Angeles?

Fred Segal because I love the food. It’s in West Hollywood. Incredible pasta and salads — everything is good there. And then near me is a casual place called Café Aldente. It’s kind of my comfort food. It’s Italian, but they have my favorite dish there. They have chicken skewers with hummus, pita, and rice and tomato. It’s kind of Mediterranean, too — I know that sounds crazy. Then I love Mr. C in Beverly Hills. Also in Beverly Hills, Locanda Veneta on West Third Street.

What are Kate Somerville’s favorite Los Angeles restaurants?

I live in Studio City, which is in Laurel Canyon. Here are my fancy places: The Soho House in L.A., because I love the environment. It’s gorgeous what they’ve done, really kind of bohemian. I just love it. My favorite food place is called Iroha, and it’s the best sushi I’ve ever had. I’ve been to the best of the best, and it’s just incredible and totally low-key. It’s this old house they turned into a restaurant. My favorite Mexican — because I love Mexican food — is called Mucho Mas, and it’s deep in the valley. I love it because the food is terrific, but you don’t have to wait. You can just go in and sit down pretty much right away.

What was the best trip Kate Somerville ever took?

I would say my first trip to New York seven years ago was the best. It was pretty crazy because I had never been to New York and the Dixie Chicks were my clients, and they were playing Madison Square Garden the night that I came in town. A limo picked me up and took me straight there, and I got to watch them and then go backstage with them. And then the next day I met with Donald Trump, and that’s when we sealed our deal with the Trump Tower. The next night, I got invited to the Soho House. It’s not fair to have a trip like that to New York for the first time because the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh were never like that, but it was pretty magical.

Who are Kate Somerville’s favorite traveling companions?

My son and my husband. They’re my bottom line. All summer they travel with me. So if I have to go somewhere, we’ll pick a spot and take three extra days and go. We went to Niagara Falls — funny places like that. Next I’m going to Fiji, and they’re meeting me in Hawaii. I travel a lot with them.

Where does Kate Somerville like to shop while traveling?

I’m typically in Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Sephora because that’s where my brand is. So I always check out what’s new in those stores. Some of my favorite stores are off the beaten path, like in London my favorite store is AllSaints. It’s also my favorite clothing brand, and they originated there and I found them there. I love Stephen Webster in L.A. He does fine jewelry, but it’s kind of rock ’n’ roll. So earthy, with an edge, and everything means something. He’s really famous for this fishbone necklace that’s all diamonds — it’s gorgeous. I hike a lot and Mountain Hardwear has the best stuff. It’s the best gear ever. Chloé is my favorite splurge, her bags. Another one I’m going to say is, I love Target. I literally never walk out spending less than $300 there.

What is Kate Somerville’s favorite airline?

I generally take Virgin Airlines now — that’s my favorite. Finally, someone does it right. I’ve had to travel to Philadelphia to visit the QVC headquarters a lot, and Virgin just started traveling there.

What does Kate Somerville always travel with?

My DermalQuench Liquid Lift — that’s No. 1, the Mach3 Razor because I like a really good shave, my Deep Tissue Repair cream, and Wen hair products by Chaz Dean — he makes a shampoo and conditioner in one. He has these little packets that you can just throw in there with you, and they’re already the amount that you need. Flip -flops, a good sweater, my iPhone filled with family and friend photos, and my iPad. I bring my iPad for movies because sometimes the flight doesn’t have movies. But a little tip: I put Neosporin in my nose, because if your nose gets really dry, you get fissures and bacteria goes in there. So it keeps you from getting sick.

What does Kate Somerville wear when traveling?

Because I travel so much, there are three things that I do: I dress comfortably and always wear cotton, I don’t wear makeup, and I typically wear flip-flops and a wrap sweater. I mostly wear a hat to kind of hide, because I don’t wear makeup on a flight, and I pull it over my eyes so I can sleep. If I’m coming back from QVC and I’m exhausted, it’s a baseball cap.

What are Kate Somerville’s favorite restaurants?

I head to Avec when I go to Chicago. It’s just an amazing restaurant. In D.C. there’s a Greek restaurant called Mourayo that’s great. In New York we go to Nobu a lot for sushi. I also go to The London in New York because it’s Gordon Ramsay, and their Cobb salad is to die for. It’s my favorite Cobb salad. It’s actually better when ordered from room service.
