Philippe Starck

Designer

Venice

A design icon, Philippe Starck pushes visual boundaries with his work on hotels, restaurants and home products. The Frenchman began working as a product and interior designer in his twenties, and became known for his modern, innovative designs (such the cult lemon juicer Alessi manufactured). In the 1980s, Starck teamed up with Ian Schrager to create stylish boutique hotels — he’s responsible for the iconic Delano Hotel in Miami. Starck now works with SLS Hotel to design the slick (but not serious) look for the group. He debuted SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills in 2008 and SLS Hotel South Beach in 2012. Katsuya by Starck is a high-end Japanese restaurant chain designed by Starck with several eateries across the country, including Miami, San Diego and Houston. He is working on The Stairs, the first all-Stark-designed resort in Asia. The Bali hotel is slated to open in 2014. The designer splits his time in four cities: Paris, New York, Venice and London.
