Tara Bernerd

Interior Designer

London

Interior designer Tara Bernerd’s client list is as long as it is diverse. She has designed everything from nightclubs and department stores to luxury hotels and private yachts in locations as far flung as Hong Kong and Istanbul. Bernerd launched Target Living in 2002, which specialized in interior architecture and design. She revamped her business, now called Tara Bernerd & Partners, to create a more bespoke consulting service that delivers her hallmark hands-on design work. In 2012, Bernerd teamed with Thompson Hotels, heading up the design for London’s Belgraves — A Thompson Hotel,  the group’s first international property, and continues to work on hotel projects with the high-profile, high-style group.

What are the best bars in London?

I live very close to Belgraves, and in that area, there’s a severe lack of somewhere you can go, sit on a huge sofa, meet friends, grab a bottle of wine and have a few snacks. So I often actually go to Belgraves — the lounge bar there.

I think The Connaught’s great. Claridge’s as well, which is one of London’s great hotels and has a great bar. In Soho, there’s a place called Randal & Aubin, and it’s a really cool. It’s an oyster bar, and they open up all their windows onto Brewer Street all day long. You can go there in the early evening, have some drinks and go have a dinner looking out onto Soho.

What is the best time to visit London?

I think May is a lovely time to visit. But it’s a city that’s like New YorkLondon is also wide awake. I don’t think it really matters whether you go in May or in September, which is also a great time of year.

What are the five best things to see and do in London?

I work a lot with Jay Jopling, one of our big art people. Jay has a huge gallery in Bermondsey. It’s called White Cube. He has several in London. I think they’re fantastic. There’s one in Mayfair, and I go to the one in Bermondsey, too.

Visitors should pop into the Royal Academy and have lunch at The Wolseley. Go to Portobello Market on the weekend and Notting Hill — even though we’ve seen the film and you’ve got the T-shirt, I think the neighborhood has a lot of vibrancy. Shoreditch is also great, the markets there. Tate Modern is also fantastic. If it’s raining, get yourself an umbrella and book a lot of great restaurants and hit the shops. If it’s sunny, the parks are beautiful.

What are the best hotels in London?

London’s very like New York in the sense you can go very uptown or more downtown. A small and quite charming hotel is the Dean Street Townhouse in the middle of Soho.  Also, there’s The Connaught, one of the most beautiful hotels in London. The Connaught is the opposite of Dean Street, and I would hazard a guess that anyone who liked The Connaught wouldn’t really be the type to go to Dean Street — but they should go there for dinner regardless. The Connaught is one of London’s original boutique hotels. It’s situated in the middle of Mayfair. I go there a lot if I’m meeting people for a drink after work.

What does Tara Bernerd wear when she travels?

When the trip is long, I change on the plane into a tracksuit or something like that. I love jeans and great white T-shirts, and I have a huge supply of leather jackets that I’ve collected over the years. I’m also an accessory collector, so I’ve usually got some funky bag, scarf or something. In Hong Kong, I usually wear a lot more suits; but my style isn’t particularly corporate. I think there are moments where you have to be more formal.

What does Tara Bernerd always travel with?

I have an iPad, and I have two phones — I have an iPhone and a BlackBerry. So those three things come with me everywhere. One phone is for work and one is personal.

What are Tara Bernerd’s favorite restaurants?

In London — I will tell you in a heartbeat — it’s the River Café, which is in Hammersmith on the river [Thames]. It’s the restaurant of Ruth Rogers, a very famous American lady who married Lord Rogers, the architect. It has unbelievable food, and there’s a great vibe. In the summer, it’s a London must. Another one of my favorite restaurants is called The Wolseley, which is near the Royal Academy of Art in London. The Wolseley is a fantastic restaurant.

There are so many super restaurants in New York, but I still prefer to go downtown. I think what Nick Jones has done recently with the Soho House is fantastic. I think that’s a great restaurant, and in London, he’s just done something called the Little House.

If you’re in Istanbul and want some breakfast, there’s a very cute restaurant on the river called Happily Ever After. I think for me, one of my reasons I keep working is that I’m so passionate about restaurants and hotels. I love to eat out, and I love to be with friends. I really enjoy the experiences, and if I can be part of building those experiences with those people, I am always honored to do it.

What are Tara Bernerd’s favorite hotels?

When I’m in Paris, I like Hotel Costes because it’s like a velvet jewelry box — you step inside and it has a plush design and is very fabricky. It’s got a lot of sex appeal. It’s a very moody, stylish place, and it’s just got it so right in terms of its bars and restaurants. So I admire Costes.

When I like to escape, some of the big brands are very good in Asia. I like to stay at the Aman in Phuket. I like to travel to Hong Kong enormously, so when I’m out there, sometimes I’ll go for a long weekend. The Aman is very grand. It’s a huge resort, but they’ve really got an Asian style that is so appropriate for them. The one in Phuket is one of the earlier ones. I think now that it’s such a big brand, it gets slightly diluted.

When I’m in New York, I stay at 60 Thompson. Its penthouse there is just fantastic. You’re downtown, and there’s a huge terrace.

What are Tara Bernerd's favorite cities to visit?

Rome will always be one of my favorite places because it’s one of the few spots that feels like something has stopped, and it has a timeless elegance. There’s a beautiful hotel called the Hotel Luce — the gardens, stillness and charm of the place are great. There’s just such a different lifestyle. It’s a much slower pace; it’s exquisite. Even if you’re in for a coffee down where the shops are and you walk past the Spanish Steps or go up to the Borghese gardens and have a coffee there, it’s a very beautiful place.
