Tracy Anderson

Entrepreneur

Venice, Calif./Sag Harbor

She may be known for transforming her celebrity clients’ bodies into lean, camera-ready machines, but Tracy Anderson is much more than a physical trainer. The former dancer intensely researched real ways to reach a toned, fit physique more than a decade ago and developed her signature system: the Tracy Anderson Method. She’s traveled the globe with her star clients (Madonna, Jennifer Lopez) and treks between her three fitness studios (with business partner Gwyneth Paltrow) in Manhattan, the Hamptons and Los Angeles. Anderson also has several workout DVDs for those who want to try her unique fitness regimen and don’t live on the East or West Coasts. In April 2013, Anderson, Paltrow and hairstylist David Babaii debuted a members-only blow dry bar in the fitness guru's new Brentwood gym.

What are Tracy Anderson’s favorite brunch spots?

I love Pastis in Manhattan. There are a lot of great restaurants in New York. Axe [pronounced “Ashay”] in Venice, has great brunch. I love pancakes, biscuits and gravy — the real deal. If I’m traveling, I’m always sitting at champagne brunch on Sunday wherever I am. Estia’s Little Kitchen in the Hamptons, too — I do love that place.

What are Tracy Anderson’s favorite things to do in Venice, Calif.?

We live in Venice because my husband loves Venice and loves to surf. We live right on the beach. I struggle to appreciate it actually — it has a really cool culture here, but I’m a safety freak mom so I have to kind of struggle to appreciate it.

I have some stores and some restaurants that I love there. There’s a little boutique called Undrest by the Sea that is really cool. They have swimsuits that are their own brand; they are knit and are really neat. They have specialty lingerie. They’ve got wonderful clothes — sweaters and things. I do love that little shop. I do like Abbot Kinney, too — it’s a really cool street.

My son likes to go to the skate park in Venice and watch the skaters. It’s actually pretty spectacular.

What are Tracy Anderson’s favorite things to do in Sag Harbor, N.Y.?

Sag Harbor and Venice are very different, and I live in both places. In Sag Harbor, I love going to the beach or the bay. We live on the bay side, but just 15 minutes from the ocean side too. That’s my favorite thing to do. All year long, too — the beach has just a whole different feel in the fall and winter there. I love taking my dog to the beach. Also, there are wonderful little shops in the Hamptons and wonderful little restaurants all over. Sag Harbor is really home for me.

What are Tracy Anderson’s favorite hotels?

I love to find a good boutique hotel. I love The Goring hotel in London — it’s so tiny and so well done. The cream of chicken soup is beyond amazing. It’s like, if I go to a big city, I don’t love to stay at say Claridge’s in London or something. You can’t just go in and out without a big spectacle. But I love the Mandarin Oriental in Prague. If I can find a great boutique hotel then that’s wonderful, but some of these larger hotel chains have done an amazing job in some of these cities. The Four Seasons in Budapest has stained-glass windows, the architecture of it just isn’t like any Four Seasons that you’d ever find in the States.

I do love a totally white bed when I go to any hotel, and you know you’re going to get that at a Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton. But Mandarin Oriental, Prague is absolutely amazing. I love the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora and all the little huts — the way that they did it there is really amazing.

I’ve been to the Soneva Fushi resort in the Maldives twice. Their mission is to make everything so green — they’re very passionate about it. From the spa to the room to the food — it’s all done so well. It’s an amazing resort. The whole entire hotel company is amazing.

I do love The Greenwich Hotel in New York City, too. I have to say, that is one of my favorite hotels. I stay there a lot.

What are Tracy Anderson’s favorite restaurants?

My favorite restaurants are not as exciting as my favorite cities. I love Prime One Twelve in Miami. It’s been on my list for many, many years. There’s not one thing on the menu that lets you down, including the desserts. And if I’m going to go to a steakhouse, I’m really picky from the beginning to the end.

I actually got married at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur and the restaurant there [Sierra Mar Restaurant] is unbelievable. I dream about it sometimes. It is just an amazing restaurant.

La Super-Rica in Santa Barbara. If I have to hit Santa Barbara for any reason go here — it’s like how Giordano’s is for me in Chicago. I had to go to Chicago when Gwyneth [Paltrow] filmed “Contagion” and when the plane hit the ground, I literally called Giordano’s that second and had pizza ready for me.
