Should visitors rent a car in Vail?

The main reason to rent would simply be to get here, since it is a little over two hours from Denver’s Airport and still an hour from the smaller Vail/Eagle airport. However, at both airports Colorado Mountain Express offers frequent and reliable scheduled door-to-door service on its group shuttles and will likely end up costing less. CME also has chauffeured cars for private transfers. Once in town, most of Vail is pedestrianized and within walking distance of top hotels, and what is not is served by frequent and easily navigated free buses – there is really just one main route - while the few peripheral hotels operate their own shuttles. The top luxury hotels like the Four Seasons also have complimentary in-town car service for guests. The only other reason to rent would be if you are planning to transfer back and forth between Vail and its sister resort Beaver Creek, which share lift tickets and do not have much in the way of connecting public transportation options.
