Toronto International Film Festival is the big show in Canada (and on the international film scene), but Vancouver International Film Festival continues to quietly build and expand its reach with each passing year. In 2013, the festival is September 26 to October 11. Last year saw close to 400 screenings of Canadian and international films both acclaimed on the festival circuit, and smaller, independent films that rely on festivals like VIFF to gain exposure and distribution. There’s plenty of opportunity for participation (and not just watching movies): the Film + TV Forum includes professional panels, interactive forums and roundtable discussions to aid the professional development of the medium. And the festival doesn’t last a few weeks — VIFF has a program that shows films year-round at Vancity Theatre.
