Along with the surfing, swimming, sunning, snorkeling and shelling you can enjoy in and around Vero Beach’s sandy shores, there is also plenty of fun to be found on the Indian River Lagoon. You can rent paddleboards, jet skis, kayaks, or motorized boats from various vendors in the area. Or kick back and watch for dolphins on one of several boat tours. If you’re feeling more adventurous, take a high-speed airboat ride on the St. John’s River.
Before you head out to explore the lagoon, learn about the marine life it supports at the Environmental Learning Center, which features aquariums, a touch tank and hands-on exhibits.
For a taste of old Florida, visit the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. The country’s first national wildlife refuge is home to endangered species such as the wood stork, West Indian manatee and green and loggerhead turtles.
