A tucked-away Ohio gem

While only 30 or so miles separate Inn Walden from the hustle and bustle of Cleveland, the inn, located among the pastures, lakes, streams and meadows of Ohio’s calming Western Reserve, feels like thousands of miles away from big-city noise and chaos. At Inn Walden, you will soon forget about your to-do lists, emails and text messages. Sit by the fireplace in the inn’s library and enjoy gourmet Harney & Sons teas (the cinnamon is a must), along with the inn’s housemade scones, brandy snaps and mini cakes, and the responsibilities and aggravations of work will be distant memories. Even a walk to your room that passes by floor-to-ceiling windows that peek out onto fountains and flowery meadows will instantly calm you.

And then there’s the spa. The attentive spa staff knows just the right moment to bring you a glass of champagne as it whisks you away to your own private suite with a steam shower, fireplace and window sill seating area with oversized pillows that beg for a nap. All treatments include time pre- and post-massage to bliss out in your private sanctuary.

The Suites

Inn Walden’s 22 suites are amenity-rich with such features as flat-screen LCD and HDTVs that play 40 channels of digital music; fireplaces; rocking chairs; whirlpool baths; oversized plush bath towels; Kashwere bathrobes; walk-in closets; separate powder room areas; Keurig coffee machines with complimentary coffees and teas; fully stocked in-room honor bars with martini fixings such as olives and vermouth mists; complimentary Wi-Fi and breakfasts; desks; and telephones with options for six languages. Suites are also stylish with Baker furniture, Brunschwig & Fils fabrics and Frette bed linens. Showers and whirlpools are lined with naturally colored Vermont slate.

Room categories — all of which have fireplaces and whirlpool baths except the Walden Suites — include 1,500-square-foot Bridal Suites with a glass garden atrium, an expansive bedroom and sitting area and secluded garden; 1,250-square-foot Loft Suites with sky-lighted stairs that lead to a second-floor sleeping area, wood ceilings, a separate living room, an en-suite bath, and views of the inn’s gardens and horse pastures; Pyramid Suites with vaulted tongue-and-groove cedar ceilings, and woodlands and pasture views; contemporary, spa-like Equestrian Suites with an open floor plan and a walk-in shower with a five shower-head control; and Walden Suites with a sleeping area, luxury bath with a makeup table, and garden and woodland vistas.

The Spa

Natural lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows help to bring elements of nature inside Inn Walden’s spa, which includes two couples’ rooms with side-by-side treatment beds, and private spa suites with steam showers, whirlpools and seating areas next to windows. Thirty minutes before and after a facial, massage or scrub, relax in your spa suite and utilize its amenities. Signature treatments include hot stone facials, Hawaiian-inspired lomilomi massages, and body wraps that include scalp and foot massages. All treatments include choice of a chakra oil, which is put in the steam shower and used in the massages, and chakra-balancing tea. The Ohio spa also has space for manicures and pedicures, haircuts and makeup applications, and a public lounge with a fireplace, fountain and selections of hot teas.

The Food

Dining options at Inn Walden include the Blue Ribbon Café, which is open for breakfast and weekend brunch. The menu includes an open-face omelet with mushrooms, spinach and local goat cheese and a challah French toast soufflé with mascarpone cheese, bananas and Ohio maple syrup. If you’d rather dine in the privacy of your suite, breakfast and brunch can be delivered for a nominal charge. For a casual lunch and dinner, Club Walden serves sandwiches, grilled fish, salads and pizzas. And if you want a more elegant dinner, make a reservation for a table inside a 175-year-old restored barn, appropriately called The Barn, where jackets are required. Dishes include mushroom ravioli with prosciutto and cream sauce, steamed New England mussels, and grilled tenderloin filet of beef with country pâté stuffing on a potato pancake with green peppercorn sauce. Both Club Walden and The Barn are off-site, only about a five-minute drive. (The inn provides complimentary rides there in its Mercedes SUV.) In case you don’t feel like venturing out, meals from Club Walden and The Barn can also be enjoyed in your suite.
