A rooftop spa escape in Guangzhou
6 Treatment Rooms
O Spa crowns one of the top floors of Grand Hyatt Guangzhou and visitors should expect phenomenal views of Pearl River New Town to go along with an expansive list of Chinese-inspired spa services that often use local ingredients to soothe aches and calm the spirit. Luxury amenities abound — including a rooftop pool and fitness center — and you can easily while away many hours at this urban retreat.
Once spa guests step out of the elevator onto the 24th floor, they are greeted by an open, airy reception area with gleaming hardwood floors, a textured stone wall, clean white couches and a scent of fresh citronella in the air. While filling out paperwork, sip on sweet honey tea until it’s treatment time. A technician will escort you from the lobby area downstairs one level to the treatment rooms, where a stone path leads the way to a sanctuary all your own. Interiors take on a Japanese feel, featuring light wood floors and ceilings, slate walls and textured wood paneling. Treatment beds sit atop a peekaboo glass floor filled with pretty red rose petals. On one side of the room there’s a chaise lounge where you’ll enjoy a foot bath before your treatment and freshly brewed jojoba tea afterward.
While there’s everything from facials to massages and nails to scrubs, the best treatments at O Spa are those that celebrate Chinese culture. Look for treatments that incorporate natural ingredients native to the Guangdong region — think black rice, lotus, loganberry, green tea, red ginger and Baiyun Mountain spring water. Enjoy an ultimate day of relaxation with a black rice and red ginger scrub, a ginseng and goji berry wrap or a signature Qi body massage that aims to rejuvenate the body and calm the mind with a mixture of techniques — starting with a dry massage, followed by bamboo and oil — all while soothing classical Chinese music plays in the background. There are a slew of massages to choose from, including a traditional hot stone massage, a deep-tissue treatment or even a refreshing massage aimed to erase jet lag. And if you have particular needs or preferences, you can always ask the spa staff to help customized a treatment using Aromatherapy Associates oils.
If you’d rather run off stress than have it massaged away, you can skip the Guangzhou spa and try out the fitness facilities instead. The gym is as classy as they come thanks to hardwood floors and ceilings, Technogym cardio equipment with built-in TVs and a spacious weight lifting area sporting sweeping views of the business district. There’s also an 82-foot-long, high-tech swimming pool that plays music underwater. Also available for relaxation? A cold plunge pool and hot and steamy whirlpool. Arrive early before your spa treatment or linger after a workout to take advantage of the locker rooms, which contain all kinds of water treatment zones like a sauna and rain showers.
